IMPULSE FESTIVAL 2020
UNINVITED GUESTS: COLOGNE
UNGEBETENE GÄSTE: KÖLN
A search for traces by DARUM
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic "Uninvited Guests: Cologne" at the Impulse Theater Festival June 2020 has been cancelled.
Every year in Cologne hundreds of people are buried with no relatives present. Who were these people? Were they lonely? And can we feel close to someone who we never met? DARUM invite us to join them on an investigation that takes us out of the theatre to the cemetery in Deutz.
Believing that every person deserves some continued existence in fictional form, the artists have researched the lives of people who have been buried alone in Cologne: they have attended lonely funerals, knocked on doors, spoken to neighbours and examined the traces that the departed have left behind them in this world. On the lower floor of the Tanzfaktur the audience will enter a multimedia collage made from the results of this research. Photos, notes, maps, items of furniture, songs and news reports offer some sense of the life that they are immersing themselves in. The viewers become the survivors of a person they never knew, visit a grave together and attempt rituals of farewell and of memory.
In its genuine attempt to gain a closer knowledge of someone who has died, UNINVITED GUESTS repeatedly switches between reality and fiction. However, even if the evidence left behind is slight and the image of the dead person remains unclear the audience and the artists replace forgetting with an image they have created together that will continue to exist. A calm and deeply moving experience that encourages us to reflect on loneliness, death and the impenetrable nature of human existence.
"Uninvited Guests: Cologne" was commissioned by the Impulse Theater Festivals based on the original production from Vienna.

An Actual Opening Party
Online performative gettogether
Including a Zoom-Performance by DARUM "Actually a search for clues"
Impulse ACTUALLY wanted to celebrate its 30th birthday this year. We ACTUALLY wanted to raise a glass with our guests, dance and indulge in some shared memories.
But that’s not going to happen. The party in Cologne has become another victim of Covid-19 and that’s why we’re not going to celebrate something else: everything that’s not happening this year. Let’s make the best of it! Our hosts are the duo Thomas Bartling and David Kilinç aka Çakey Blond, who were ACTUALLY going to host the after show party on our opening night but have now been promoted to become the main act. In the nowhere of the world wide web they will welcome Impulse artists whose contributions to the festival programme could not be adapted into online versions. There are many reasons for this and they will let us know some of them. Not hiding their mouths with the backs of their hands, but on a massive zoom stage or in exclusive booths. A party under special circumstances to show what can’t be shown. Actually impossible.
Hosts: Çakey Blond (Thomas Bartling, David Kilinç)
With contributions from: Club Real, DARUM, Florentina Holzinger, Impulse Ultras, Rimini Protokoll (Stefan Kaegi), Quast & Knoblich, Joana Tischkau, Turbo Pascal, Teresa Vittucci u. a.
Review to DARUMs Zoom-Performance "Actually a search for clues":
"The deceased are given the opportunity to take center stage, and the departed are given a voice. This is the legendary invitation: to raise a glass online to a real unknown deceased. The audience and Impulse participants toast digitally to G.'s name. It is a touching gesture that also avoids being too sad or kitschy."
